Our History

The beautiful valley situated at a distance of 205 KM from Jammu to its North at an altitude of 5295 feet above sea level. Bhaderwah was also known as Nagon ki bhoomi, which translates as "Snake Land." The place that Mahanju Daru and Harappan civilization have in Indian history is the same place that the history of Dugha Nagar and Udha Nagar civilization have in the history of Bhaderwah. With its capital at today's Garh, Sungli, the ancient Bhaderwah, had been a sovereign and prosperous state. Its famous cities were Dugga Nagar and Udha Nagar, which were situated where present-day Mounda and Sartingal are. According to the Vasuki Puran, when the Pandavas perform the Ashumegh Yagna, Sawan, the then-king of Bhaderwah, gives the Pandavas the Samkaran horse, which grazes on the meadows surrounding holy Sonbain. It is also said that a university with a capacity of lodging and boarding for about ten thousand students existed exactly where the Bhaderwah University campus is built. But as has been the universal truth, the glory of Dugga Nagar and Udha Nagar did not live forever. Both died under the red hot lava of the nearby Kailash Mountain volcano, which erupted. The ruling clan, however, survived. After the destruction of Dugga Nagar and Udha Nagar, the then king Bharat established a new city and named it Bhadarvart. Today, Bhadrote is the disfigured name of that city. But after some time, when the rulers of Bhaderwah became weak, the rulers of the adjoining Bhadu Blawar conquered them and annexed the states of Bhaderwah and Basholi(present-day Basholi of Katthua District of Jammu Province) to become part of their kingdom. Afterwards, prince Radhk was given the state of Bhaderwah and he ruled it, calling himself Raja Lakshmi Dev. This dynasty ruled Bhaderwah up to the 16th generation, with Pahar Chand as its last king. During the Paul Dynasty rule, a noble king named Nag Pal impressed the Mughal King with his spiritual powers and undaunted courage. Since then, the famous Mela Pat is celebrated in Khakhal mohalla of Bhaderwah every year to commemorate that historical event. The Bhaderwah town area Committee was established in the year 1934 and upgraded as Notified area Committee in 6th of March 1963 and as Municipal Committee the year June1993. br>
