Our History

Jourian Town is situated at a distance of 47 kms. from the District Head Quarters and 13 kms. from the line of Actual Control between India and Pakistan. In revenue records, the name of the town is regarded as RAKH DHOK instead of Jourian. The twin trees of Mango and Peepal which were joined together provided shade and shelter to the people during hard days made this place famous as Jourian (i.e. couple). The migrants from Pakistan during partition took refuge in this town and ultimately settled here. The town provides shelter to the border people during the intermittent skirmishes between India and Pakistan. The migrant camp of Devipur is situated at a distance of 8 kms. from this town.

Municipal Committee of Jourian came into existence in 1986 as Notified area committee vide S.R.O 133 dated 27.02.1986 and renamed as Municipal Committee vide S.R.O 45 dated 18.02.2003. The town has been divided into 7 wards covering 1.5 kms. of radial distance. The population of the town as per Census 2011 is 4000 approximately. Annual growth rate of the town is 4.5% as per the date of last 5 years.

About 6000 people from surrounding areas usually visit Jourian Town for the purpose of education, business, official work, medical check-up, etc. The town is though developing at rapid speed but still some slum pockets of the town are under-developed and the economic condition of the inhabitants is pitiable. The many funds are required for providing basic amenities i.e. Street Lights, better sanitations and assistance for construction of toilets/ IHHL units, public utilities etc. from the Government.

This Urban Local Bodies Institution (M.C.Jourian) has started the Swachch Bharat Abiyaan w.e.f. from 02.10.2014 to till its fruitful achievement on a/c of sanitation drives/ awareness to general public of the Jourian Town.
