It is submitted that before 1947 during the regime of kings, Poonch principality, the glory of its own times was a vital center of business transactions in the Poonch state. Poonch was not a Town, it had been the principality of an autonomous Poonch State before partition. It is one of the beautiful towns in Jammu & Kashmir situated in the foot of Peer Panchal High Mountains surrounded by two streams flowing from Panchal Hills with transparent blue water. It is also called as mini Kashmir because of its scenic view having many historical legends of the “Past” such as, Poonch Gate, Poonch fort, spacious green playgrounds, Historical Hospital of King Sukhdev Singh, Moti palace, Baldev palace, Sheesh palace and Krishan Chander Park in the memory of a great National writer. Its height with respect to sea is 1054 mtrs with latitude N-30° 46 233 and longitude E-74° 56 415 based on the population of 22615 persons but its existing population is more than 90000 souls with 3.00 sq.k.mtr area. The climate of Poonch town is pleasant in summer and not too cold in winter.
Poonch Municipality was established earlier in 1935 with a perfect master design of development but the unlucky turn of partition in 1947 set an ugly plague upon its features affecting it badly due to evacuation from other Tehsils of Poonch. It turned it into a refugee camp instead of a developing sphere. Aftermath, Brigadier Pritam Singh (the savior of Poonch town) with the assistance of Govt. of India managed the rehabilitation of the evacuees. Keeping in view the congestion and lack of civic facilities to the huge number of displaced families, different refugee camps were established by Govt. of India at Simbol Camp, Bhor Camp, Jhawalla at Jammu Youl Camp in Himachal, Umbala, Kanshipur and Nainital in Uttar Pradesh. This rehabilitation process brought a sigh of relief to the sufferers. The refugees who could not leave Poonch started to grow with a hard lease of life under an unhealthy pawl of life confronting so many challenges which made the principality of Poonch state bad to worse. Since then, it is under the process of development, but the lost glory of Poonch has not been restored as yet.
