Our History


Basohli is a rural and hilly town situated on the right bank of River Ravi in the Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. Founded in 1635 by Raja Bhupat Pal, Basohli is most famous for the art of Pahari miniatures known as Basohli Paintings and exquisite Pashmina shawls. The Municipal committee of Basohli was established in 1963 to administer this town located about 65 km from the Kathua district headquarters. Connected to neighboring states by the 592-metre Atal Setu bridge over the Ravi, the local population in Basohli speaks languages like Kashmiri, Urdu, Hindi, Pahari and English. Overall, Basohli is a scenic hill town with a rich cultural heritage spanning across music, dance, paintings, crafts and literature.
