About The Municipality

The Thanamandi Municipal Committee, established on January 24, 1980, plays a pivotal role in the administration and development of this historic town in the Rajouri district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. Covering an area of 2 square kilometers, Thanamandi is known for its rich history and cultural heritage.

The municipal committee oversees various aspects of town governance, including a total of 968 households and 582 commercial units within the town. This committee was founded with a vision of providing essential services and infrastructure to the local population. Thanamandi's historical importance is deeply rooted in its location along the Mughal Road, an ancient trade route connecting Delhi and Kashmir. The town's population, estimated at around 3,500 people, is a testament to its enduring significance.

The town's historical legacy extends back to the 15th century when it served as a vital trading center. It also witnessed a critical battle between two Kashmiri rulers in 1420. The Mughals frequented Thanamandi during their journeys between Delhi and Kashmir, leaving behind an old Mughal Sarai as a testament to that era.

One of the most notable events in Thanamandi's history was the conflict between Zial-ul-Aabdeen and Sultan Ali Shah of Kashmir, a battle that determined the fate of Kashmir. Sultan Zain-ul-Aabdeen-Badshah emerged victorious in 1420 A.D., further cementing Thanamandi's historical significance. Today, Thanamandi is not only a historical site but also a charming health resort known for its favorable climate. The town is famous for its exquisite wooden products, reflecting its artistic heritage. The Municipal Committee continues to work towards the town's development, preserving its historical legacy while meeting the needs of its residents and visitors.
