Formation and Area Covered

The Municipal Council Doda was established in December 1962 to address the administrative and developmental needs of the urban area under its jurisdiction. Covering an area of approximately 8.6 square kilometers, the council oversees a diverse range of neighborhoods, commercial zones, and civic amenities. The council's formation marked a significant step towards organized urban governance in the region.

Historical Significance and Evolution

The district Doda has a rich historical background, with records dating back to ancient times. The district derived its name from its headquarters, Doda, which was originally settled by a migrant named Deeda from Multan, Pakistan. Over time, the name Deeda transformed into Doda, which continues to be the district's name today. The region has seen the rule of various dynasties, including Ranas, Rajas, and independent chiefs. Maharaja Gulab Singh, the ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, conquered Doda in 1822 AD and saved it from devastation. Doda served as the winter capital of the erstwhile state of Kishtwar. The historical Fort of Doda, strategically built to defend against potential attacks, played a vital role in the region's history. However, the fort was demolished in 1952, and the site is now occupied by the buildings of Govt. Boys Higher Secondary Schools Doda.
