About The Council


Kishtwar Municipal Council is the only Urban Local Body in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir state. It was established in 1948 and comprises 13 wards spread over an area of about 8 Sq. Km. The population of MC Kishtwar as per census 2011 was 14865 souls, which accounts for 6.4% of the total population of the district. The council is committed to providing efficient and effective services to its citizens and making Kishtwar a clean, green, and sustainable city.


Culture and Heritage of Kishtwar

Kishtwar has a rich cultural heritage and attracts thousands of pilgrims from across the country every year. The holy shrine of Mata Chandi at Machail and Sofi Saints, Shah Fareed-ud-din Bagdadi and Shah Asrar-ud-din Bagdadi at Kishtwar are some of the popular destinations for pilgrims. The town is also known for its traditional handicrafts, especially the Kishtwari Pashmina shawls, which are famous worldwide for their intricate designs and softness.
